CONTROLLING AND MONITORING DIESEL EMISSIONS IN UNDERGROUND MINES IN THE UNITED STATES
This paper by Steven Mischler and Jay Colinet of NIOSH highlights practices developed between 2001 and 2009 to minimise worker exposure to DPM.
The study highlights the benefits of good maintenance practices on the engine and how this reduces the load of DPM that need to be managed by other means.
Useful indicators shared in the paper are:
- Using CO2 as a means of estimating the likely DPM present in a work area
- Preventative maintenance in preference to run to failure for DPM control elements in the engine
- After treatment using catalysts (DOC) and filters (DPF) to further reduce emitted DPM, and
- Monitoring benefits, both of the engine and of the ambient air in the workings
